¶ FEWER volunteers turned out for Collie Rotary Club’s annual roadside clean-up last Saturday, but in spite of this they managed to remove more litter than in the last few years.
Organiser Kalon Gibson said the response showed there is a need to recruit new helpers for the future.
“The average age of the volunteers was 70, so we have to try to find younger people to carry on the work,” Mr Gibson said.
“They did a great job, but realistically we can’t just rely on the older people.”
Saturday’s effort began at the Collie Visitor Centre and headed west, finishing in the Hamilton Bridge area.
“There was a concentration of litter at the bridge, quite a lot of the stuff we collected was from there,” Mr Gibson said.
“That must be the point where people finish eating their fast food, as fast food containers featured heavily.
“There were also coffee cups and alcohol-related rubbish.”
