Welly Dam bridge works underway

CONSTRUCTION is underway on a new dual-lane bridge with a pedestrian walkway at the Wellington Dam.
The bridge will replace the original single-lane bridge, delivering additional capacity for larger buses and coaches, while a relocated walkway will provide unobstructed views of the dam mural.
It is expected to be completed in mid-2026.
In the interim, the Falcon Road crossing remains closed to both vehicles and pedestrians.
“The original bridge from 1966 only had a single lane and was built decades before the Wellington Dam mural was conceived,” Water Corporation acting general manager assets planning and delivery Nathan Hardwick said.
“By permitting large passenger vehicles, the new bridge will make the mural more accessible, whether as a pedestrian or from the comfort of a coach.
“During construction, all other facilities at Wellington Dam remain open, so visitors can still enjoy an excellent view of the mural while enjoying a barbecue lunch or bite to eat at the cafe.”
