Stress growing over bus uncertainty: Fears over community access to medical services

¶ MICHAEL O’Donoghue fears he and his wife will be cut off from critical medical services if the Collie-to-Bunbury bus service is cancelled.
As reported by the Bulletin earlier this month, the Public Transport Authority advised the service is still “under review” following completion of a trial in January last year.
Queries as to whether the trial data will be made publicly available and if it is normal practice to take more than a year to come to a decision were not answered.
Mr O’Donoghue said he can not understand why it has taken so long to make a decision one way or another.
“It’s like having a gun pointed to your head all the time,” he said.
“You’re waiting for a decision and it’s not coming.”
Mr O’Donoghue and his wife both use the bus to access medical services in Bunbury, Busselton and Perth.
He said on the days they have used it patronage has been healthy.
“It has at least been half full or three-quarters full,” he said.
“I’ve heard sometimes it’s full.”
Earlier this month, Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said the government intends to provide the community with an update “very soon”.
Mr O’Donoghue said without the bus he and his wife would likely find themselves reliant on family members, who would have to take time off work, creating further financial strain.
“Give us the same sort of services as what they do in the city,” he said.
