Rail history unearthed
1 min read

¶ A PIECE of local rail history was recently unearthed by two members of the Collie Rail Heritage Group.
Keith Robinson and Trevor Wright undertook an extensive search of the old rail track bed between Lyalls Mill and Cardiff during the Australian Heritage Festival.
Mr Wright discovered a length of rail with the maker’s name on it, BIW Co. Limited, dated 1874.
Mr Robinson said it was quite a surprise to find the rail.
“They used to have the timber mill there and they’d cut out all the timber and then they’d move to another place with fresh timber,” he said,
“They’d pull up their rail and it would go from one place to the other.
“The rail had been used at other places before. But I would say that would be the last place it was used.”
The group will now decide how to best display the rail.
“To some people it’s just a piece of rail, but to us it is history,” Mr Robinson said
