¶ THE theft of grass turf laid at Minningup Pool has been labelled a “very low act”.
Collie Shire undertook maintenance at Minningup over the last few months, including laying of the turf, refurbishment of the gazebo and picnic setting, and the replacement of timber steps.
However, shortly after completion of the project, patches of turf were ripped up and stolen.
Shire president Ian Miffling said the perpetrator/s had taken it upon themselves to steal something installed for the benefit of the entire community.
“Speaking on behalf of the council and staff I must say that we are very disappointed, disgusted really, in the wanton theft of portions of the new grass surface,” Cr Miffling said.
“It has distressed the council staff who put time and effort into the design and costings, and the contractors who did a really great job in carrying the project through to its conclusion.”
The theft is also disrespectful to local Aboriginal people for whom “Minningup Pool has such cultural meaning”, Cr Miffling added.
“It is a disgusting act not worthy of what our community should expect when all the council has tried to do is reinstate the small area of Minningup Pool to what it once was,” he said.
“Hopefully when repairs are carried out the area will be left intact ready for summer enjoyment in the not-too-distant future.”
