¶ MAINTENANCE works are underway at Minningup Pool’s main day-use area.
As reported by the Bulletin in May, Collie Shire is undertaking the works following negotiations with the State Government and consultations with Aboriginal stakeholders, including Aboriginal elder Joe Northover and the Gnaala Karla Booja Aboriginal Corporation.
Maintenance includes relaying of the grassed area and refurbishment of the gazebo and picnic setting, along with the replacement of timber steps.
The work is being funded by $93,000 remaining from a $500,000 government grant for the previously proposed eco-tourism development at Minningup.
The proposal was met with significant community backlash as locals banded together to voice their objections.
Council subsequently removed the project from its list of strategic priorities.
In May, Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said the works will “ensure this culturally sensitive and valuable community asset is maintained for continued community use”.
“The upgrades will help maintain Minningup Pool as a safe, welcoming and accessible space for the community to gather, connect with nature and participate in healthy recreational activities,” Mrs Hanns said.
