Ag Society warns lack of volunteers could be a show-stopper

¶ THE Collie Agricultural Society desperately needs new volunteers to ensure the survival of the much-loved Collie Show.
The show has been a fixture of the Collie calendar for more than 60 years, however organisers hold grave concerns about its future if more community members do not step up to lend a hand.
Treasurer Les Whymark said despite increasing costs, the show can adjust and continue to survive financially.
However, it is a matter of having people in place to drive it forward in the coming years, Mr Whymark added.
Mr Whymark and fellow long-term society member and secretary Judy Davidson both plan on stepping back from their roles later this year, creating further pressures for what is structured as a 16-person committee.
“Out of those 16 positions, we’ve probably got six or seven people covering them,” Mr Whymark said.
“That’s unsustainable, and this is the big problem.”
Mrs Davidson encouraged young people to become involved.
“We badly need help,” she said. “That’s our biggest issue.
“We will be here to help whoever takes on the positions.”
In the short term, the society needs help organising this year’s show, to be held on Saturday, October 18, including volunteer stewards for the pavilion and to assist with duties including setting up marquees.
All volunteers are welcomed, even if only for a couple of hours on show day.
Further information and committee contact details are available via the Collie Agricultural Society website at www.collieag.org.au.
