¶ A STABLE roof at the Collie Harness Racing Club was blown off and more than 500 residents were left without power during Sunday’s wet and windy weather.
Club secretary Peter Hemsley told the Bulletin the roof came loose in a matter of seconds just before midday.
The club curator had briefly turned his attention elsewhere and when he looked back, the roof was gone, Mr Hemsley said.
“It happened very, very quickly late on Sunday morning,” he said.
“It’s amazing how it flipped it straight off.”
Mr Hemsley said the club is working quickly to ensure the roof is replaced before the first of this season’s meetings on October 5.
A fallen branch was the likely cause of a power outage at around 9.30am, a Western Power spokesperson told the Bulletin.
Businesses in Forrest Street were left without power and forced to close, while social media users warned of a traffic light failure.
Some residents were without power for most of the day.
“Crews worked as swiftly and safely as possible to complete repairs and restore power to all customers at around 5pm,” the spokesperson said.
SES manager Monika Nicholson said despite the weather it was a relatively quiet day for personnel.
A crew attended just the one call-out, Mrs Nicholson said.
