¶ CONSTRUCTION of a “five-star” backpacker trails lodge is set to shortly commence at Collie Park Shopping Centre.
Work has been ongoing throughout the year preparing for conversion of the old Target building into accommodation, specifically targeted at mountain bikers and hikers.
Co-owner Colin Smout said converting a retail space into accommodation has presented a range of challenges involved with transitioning the space from one planning category to another.
Mr Smout said plans will shortly be submitted to Collie Shire for a building permit.
“Then we can start with the construction of the new internal fitout of the building,” Mr Smout said.
It is targeted to have the lodge up and running by Christmas.
The first stage of the development is being undertaken in Target’s old storeroom facility, covering about a quarter of the building.
It will comprise 30 beds across three bunk rooms and three standard ensuite rooms.
The accommodation will include an open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area.
A bike storage area and charging station is also being developed.
“We’re providing a basic bike wash-down and basic repair station for people who are staying at the lodge to use,” Mr Smout said.
