¶ GREEN Steel of WA has ticked off all regulatory and statutory requirements as it eyes beginning construction of its $500 million Collie Steel Mill by the end of the year.
The company will now progress toward the finalisation of commercial contracts and project financing ahead of a final investment decision.
The project has been supported by $2.7 million in State Government funding via the Collie Industry Attraction and Development Fund.
“Establishing a green iron and steel industry in WA is a key focus of our Made in WA plan, and Collie’s green steel mill will kickstart this new industry,” Premier Roger Cook said.
“Hitting these key milestones is another step forward to securing Collie’s future as a major new industrial hub.”
Managing director Azlan Ho believes Australia’s first green steel mill, slated for development in the Coolangatta Industrial Estate, will pave the way for Collie to become WA’s hub of green manufacturing. Mr Ho previously likened Green Steel to an “anchor tenant” in highlighting Coolangatta’s multi-user appeal.
“We’re really thinking the Collie mill will be the project that gets Coolangatta underway,” he said.
“It will be the step that gets everything going.”
The mill will produce 450,000 tonnes of steel each year, converting locally sourced scrap steel into low-carbon rebar.
It is expected to create 500 jobs during construction and 200 long-term positions.
