Riverview underway: Ceremony marks groundbreaking at project

¶ GROUND was officially broken at the long-mooted Riverview Residence retiree units redevelopment last week.
A small ceremony was held at the site, off Pendleton Street, marking the start of the project’s earthworks, to be carried out in the coming months ahead of delivery of 12 modular units.
Riverview chief executive officer Mark Sheldon-Stemm said the units, constructed by Modular WA in Perth, are expected to be delivered in early 2026.
Mr Sheldon-Stemm told those at the ceremony it had been a long road to development after the project was first floated in 2017.
“It has been a journey,” Mr Sheldon-Stemm said.
“I’m very pleased to see that we’ve finally arrived after all this time.”
The redevelopment encountered a series of delays after sky-rocketing costs post-Covid led to a blowout at stage one of the project in 2023, forcing its proponents to reassess their options.
Initial State Government funding of $2 million was allocated for the project, however unsuccessful attempts were also made to secure additional state and federal funding.
The redevelopment subsequently underwent a revamp, driving down construction costs.
In March, Collie Shire Council approved a development approval application for stage one of the project.
It is planned for overall development of the site to be carried out over four stages, comprising 35 units, a clubhouse and visitor carparking.
Mr Sheldon-Stemm acknowledged the support provided by the State Government, Community Bank Collie & Districts and the Coal Miners’ Welfare Board.
“Without you, we couldn’t do this,” he said.
Community Bank Collie chairwoman Sasacha Shepherd said the bank is proud to be part of the project, describing it as an “exciting initiative that promises to deliver lasting benefits for the Collie community”.
“This project is testament to the dedication, collaboration, and hard work of everyone involved,” she said.
“The entire team should be proud of the progress made to bring the development to this stage.
“We are excited to see groundworks begin and look forward to witnessing the transformation of the Riverview site into a space that reflects the vibrancy and potential of our region.”
Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said she is excited to see the project move forward.
“I am delighted to see this important project progress with $2 million funding from the Cook Labor Government as a result of a 2017 election commitment,” Mrs Hanns said.
“This development will provide much-needed housing for seniors.
“It will allow them to age-in-place and stay connected to their family, friends and community.”
