Council endorses complaints policy

¶ COLLIE Shire Council adopted a new code of conduct complaints management process policy for elected members at its August meeting.
While council previously adopted a model code of conduct, the new policy is designed to deliver further guidance in navigating the process.
In addition to the newly introduced policy, an updated complaint form was also approved.
Shire chief executive officer Phil Anastasakis told council the policy articulates steps that need to be followed.
“It’s clear that if someone has a complaint about an elected member, whether it is another councillor or a member of the public, that there is a process that needs to be followed,” Mr Anastasakis said.
“There is natural justice in the process, which is really important, that if someone has an accusation against them, they have the ability to defend themselves.”
There are consequences for false accusations and complaints, Mr Anastasakis added.
“It’s an important process to have and to have it really clear,” he said.
“Particularly as we’re going into the election process, so that as new councillors come onboard they are aware that there is a process.”
